A seminar hosted by the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education
Where: Room 938, IOE, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0XG and online
When: Thursday 14 May, 15:30 - 17:30pm (GMT+1) (in-person) / 16:00 - 17:30pm (GMT+1) (online)
This hybrid seminar will explore music, making, engineering, and environmental sustainability in schools. Ross Purves, Evangelos Himonides and Nicolas Gold from the IOE will introduce a new environmentally sustainable platform used for designing and programming hybrid acoustic–digital musical instruments. The platform supports creative, interdisciplinary learning at the intersection of music, making, and software engineering. It draws from eight years of classroom‑based research using LEGO®, robotics sensors, and Raspberry Pi computers and is a low-cost solution made from recycled cardboard, eco‑friendly adhesives, and open‑source electronics.
In-person participants will be able to experiment with the new platform. Online attendees will have an interactive demonstration on camera.
The seminar will also introduce the new Teaching for Sustainable Futures music professional development modules for primary and secondary school teachers.
